Beginner Birder Workshop

Forest Ecology Trail -- Paul Smith's VIC

Adirondack Birding Center Director Brian McAllister led a beginner birder workshop on 8 July 2011. The walk was part of the Beginner Birder Workshops at the VIC. The walk began at 8:00 AM, when we met at the parking lot at the Paul Smith's College VIC. We did a clockwise trip around Heron Marsh, covering the Heron Marsh Trail, the bridge on the Shingle Mill Falls Trail, the Forest Ecology Trail, and the Barnum Brook Trail. The highlight of the walk was a sighting of five American Bitterns on Heron Marsh – three juveniles and two adults.

We heard or saw the following birds on the Heron Marsh Trail:

Red-eyed Vireo Ovenbird
Hermit Thrush Red-breasted Nuthatch
Cedar Waxwing Swamp Sparrow
Broad-winged Hawk Red-winged Blackbird
Common Yellowthroat Mallard
Wood Duck American Bittern
Ring-necked Duck American Black Duck
Common Loon Tree Swallow
Black-capped Chickadee

In the woods on the Forest Ecology Trail, we saw or heard the following birds:

Red-eyed Vireo Nashville Warbler
Black-throated Green Warbler Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
Red-Breasted Nuthatch Black-capped Chickadee
Common Yellowthroat Hermit Thrush
Palm Warbler Magnolia Warbler
Ruffed Grouse Blackburnian Warbler
Winter Wren Golden-crowned Kinglet
White-throated Sparrow

Along the board walk on the Forest Ecology Trail, we heard or saw the following birds

Red-eyed Vireo Nashville Warbler
Common Yellowthroat Hairy Woodpecker
Palm Warbler Swamp Sparrow

On the Barnum Brook Trail, we heard or saw the following birds:

Red-eyed Vireo Swamp Sparrow
Common Yellowthroat Red-winged Blackbird
