The late December snow prompted the Paul Smiths VIC staff to organize the first Nordic event of the winter season on Saturday. The inaugural "Father Time" races brought out a variety of early season cross country ski racers from area high schools, colleges, NYSEF, Team Cook, and the Peru Nordic Ski Club.

It was a clean sweep for Peru Nordic in the 10K Freestyle event. Jon Santor, Coach of the Paul Smith's College Nordic Team, took top honors and a bag of Blue Tuckers Potatoes with a time of 33:00. Chris Rose was second in 33:15 winning a bag of red spuds; and Jim Kobak was third in 34:02 winning a bag of white potatoes for his effort. In the women's 10 K, Gretchen O'Leary of the Tupper Lake High School ski team took top honors with a time of 38:27.

In the 5 kilometer event, NYSEF skier Royal McDonnell won the men's race and a bag of blue Tucker's Taters with a time of 17:26. In for the red spuds was Saranac Lake High School skier Ethan Wood in a time of 21:07, followed by his team mate Nathaniel Miller in 23:19, good enough for a bag of white potatoes. In the Women's race, Jessica Zobel of Team Cook won the Blue Potatoes with a time of 21:35. In second was Saranac Lake High School skier Johanna Mohrs finishing in 30:16. Race sponsors included Tucker's Taters, Byrne Dairy, and MAC'S Canoe Livery.

The next race in the VIC Winter Nordic Series will take place on 20 January as part of the VIC's annual Chili Ski Festival. On 16 February, a new event -- the VIC Ultra -- will take place featuring team and individual competition on a 10K freestyle, 10K Classic and 5K Snowshoe course.
