Adirondack Birding Center Director Brian McAllister led a bird walk on the Heron Marsh Trail on 30 May 2012. The walk was part of the "TR" Birding Series. The walk began at 9:00 AM, when we met in the VIC building at the Paul Smith's College VIC. We saw or heard a total of 32 birds. Highlights of the walk included some excellent views of three American Bitterns overflying Heron Marsh, as well as a good view of a Broad-winged Hawk and a family of eight Ring-necked Ducks. We also had some good views of several Black-throated Blue Warblers. The Heron Marsh Trail was abloom with Lady's Slippers.

Near the VIC building and the parking lot, we saw or heard the following birds:

Broad-winged Hawk Eastern Phoebe
Ruby-throated Hummingbird Brown Creeper
Chipping Sparrow Blackburnian Warbler
Blue-headed Vireo American Robin
Northern Parula Black-throated Blue Warbler
Ovenbird  

 

On the Heron Marsh Trail from the VIC building to the floating bridge, we saw or heard the following birds:

Magnolia Warbler Red-winged Blackbird
Swamp Sparrow White-throated Sparrow
Common Yellowthroat American Bittern
American Black Duck Ring-necked Duck
Song Sparrow Hermit Thrush
Ruby-crowned Kinglet Black-capped Chickadee
Blackburnian Warbler  

 

On the Heron Marsh Trail near Shingle Mill Falls, we saw or heard the following birds:

Blue-headed Vireo Mallard
Northern Parula Black-throated Green Warbler
Black-capped Chickadee American Crow
Red-eyed Vireo Black-throated Blue Warbler
Nashville Warbler American Robin
Red-Breasted Nuthatch Yellow-rumped Warbler
Blue Jay Wood Duck
American Black Duck Magnolia Warbler
Blue-headed Vireo Ovenbird
Broad-winged Hawk Common Yellowthroat

 

We also observed a number of wildflowers blooming or in bud:

Lady's Slipper Starflower
Bunchberry Labrador Tea
Clintonia Wild Sarsaparilla
Canada Mayflower
