On 31 May 2014, Adirondack Birding Center Director Brian McAllister led a bird walk on the Loggers Loop Trail, Boreal Life Trail, and the Barnum Brook Trail. The walk was part of the "TR" Birding Series. The walk began at 9:00 AM, when we met in the VIC building at the Paul Smith's College VIC. It was a cool, brilliantly sunny day. We saw or heard a total of 31 bird species.  Highlights of the walk included excellent views of Blackburnian Warblers in breeding plumage, as well as good views of an American Bittern on Heron Marsh. We also had a distant view of a Common Loon on Barnum Pond (from the Boreal Life Trail overlook).

In and around the VIC parking lot, we saw or heard the following birds:

Eastern Phoebe Ovenbird
Red-eyed Vireo Black-throated Blue Warbler
Chipping Sparrow Blackburnian Warbler
Black-capped Chickadee Yellow-rumped Warbler
American Robin  

On the Barnum Brook Trail, we saw or heard the following birds:

Blackburnian Warbler Blue-headed Vireo
Song Sparrow White-throated Sparrow
Swamp Sparrow Black-capped Chickadee
Red-breasted Nuthatch Red-winged Blackbird
American Bittern Ruby-throated Hummingbird
Northern Parula Ovenbird
Blue Jay  

On the Loggers Loop Trail, we saw or heard the following birds:

Magnolia Warbler Ovenbird
Winter Wren Black-throated Green Warbler
Blue-headed Vireo Blue Jay
Pileated Woodpecker Red-breasted Nuthatch
Black-capped Chickadee Red-eyed Vireo

On the Boreal Life Trail, we saw or heard the following birds:

Purple Finch Black-capped Chickadee
Northern Parula Common Yellowthroat
Swamp Sparrow Nashville Warbler
Yellow-rumped Warbler Common Loon
Blue-headed Vireo Chimney Swift
Red-breasted Nuthatch White-throated Sparrow
Palm Warbler Golden-crowned Kinglet
Ovenbird Brown Creeper
Alder Flycatcher  

We also observed the following shrubs and wildflowers in bloom or bud:

Painted Trillium Hobblebush
Foamflower Buckbean
Leatherleaf Indian Cucumber-root
Starflower Cotton Grass
Bog Laurel Bog Rosemary

The VIC trails are free and open to the public, from dawn to dusk, spring through fall. In winter, the trails are open to cross-country skiers and snowshoers for a fee. Day or season passes may be purchased.
