Beyond the Exhibition: Dreaming of Timbuctoo
2 August - 14 September

Dreaming of Timbuctoo is a traveling exhibition that opened at the Adirondack Museum at Blue Mountain Lake, New York, in May 2001. The exhibition tells the story of Black homesteaders granted forty acres in the Adirondacks in the 1840's and illuminates the crucial role of land and the vote in the political war on slavery and racism in New York State fifteen years before the Civil War. On 2 August, the VIC will host an opening reception and talk at 7 PM on new findings and Franklin County connections to "Timbuctoo" by exhibition curator Amy Godine. There will also be an update on the Timbuctoo Archaeology Project by Hadley Kruczek-Aaron. The exhibition is produced under the direction of the grass roots freedom education and human rights project, "John Brown Lives!" The exhibition is presented by John Brown Lives!, Adirondack Center for Writing, Six Nations Indian Museum, and the Paul Smith's College VIC. The exhibition will be the centerpiece of several programs occurring at the VIC in the month of August. Admission to the exhibition is free. There is a $5 admission for this special presentation.
